Loons reward Tani Oluwaseyi with new contract

After a breakout season, Minnesota United announced Tuesday it has rewarded forward Tani Oluwaseyi with a contract extension through the 2027 season, with a club option for 2028.

Oluwaseyi earned $89,716 last season, according to the MLS Players’ Association, and is in line for a significant pay raise in his new deal. He had eight goals and five primary assists in 1,084 minutes across 25 appearances this season, and his strong start to the year led to call-ups with the Canadian national team.

“Tani has showed patience, a belief and desire to improve, making himself an important part of Minnesota United, and also for his country,” Loons Chief Soccer Officer Khaled El-Ahmad said in a statement. “We are looking forward to continually following his progress as a player and to have that growth contribute to the future success of this team.”

Oluwaseyi, who will be 25 in May, was red hot to start last season with seven goals in his first 15 games. But he had no goals in his final 11 MLS appearances, which coincided with the addition of striker Kelvin Yeboah from Belgium.

“I’m extremely excited and happy to continue to call Minnesota home,” Oluwaseyi said in a statement. “To the best fans in the world, thank you for the continued support. I’m looking forward to all the work and progress to come.”

Oluwaseyi was picked 17th overall in the 2022 MLS draft. After injuries derailed his first season, he was sent on loan to San Antonio in the USL Championship in 2023, where he had 16 goals and seven assists in 2,036 minutes.
