2 pulled from Woodbury lake after falling through ice during accident, attempted rescue

Woodbury first responders pulled two people from Markgrafs Lake on Monday after a juvenile fell through thin ice and a would-be rescuer also plunged into the frigid water.

The conditions of the two were not immediately available Monday night.

According to Woodbury authorities, a 911 caller reported around 4:30 p.m. that a child had gone through the ice on the lake southeast of Interstate 94 and Woodbury Drive. First responders, including divers, arrived within a few minutes and began rescue operations.

Upon arrival, witnesses told authorities that other people had gone out onto the ice to rescue the first victim and that they had also fallen through the ice, Woodbury spokesman John Altman said in a Monday night statement.

One victim was pulled from the lake and taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul. Details about that victim were not immediately available.

The second victim, a teenage boy, was later found underwater by divers and also taken to Regions.

Authorities say that they don’t believe anyone else fell through the ice.

The incident was the second such emergency in Woodbury on Monday. At 11:15 a.m. a man was rescued from nearby Wilmes Lake after falling through thin ice.

Despite the recent cold temperatures, authorities warn that people should be wary of thin ice on lakes and ponds.
