You can now add a new rushing attack to the list.

Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson confirmed Tuesday the offense has pivoted to an outside zone-based run game. Stevenson met with reporters after a morning of on-field workouts during the team’s fourth week of voluntary Organized Team Activities (OTAs). The 26-year-old is familiar with the scheme, having run it in college at Oklahoma.

“I like outside zone, reading the defense and running one cut and go,” Stevenson said. “When you hear outside zone, you kind of think of getting the ball outside, but it’s not really like that. It’s stretching outside to go back upfield.”

Stevenson specified that while the Patriots will major in outside zone, new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt has diversified the team’s rushing playbook. Under previous coaching staffs, the offense remained loyal to man-blocked or “gap” schemes, which assign offensive linemen to block particular defenders. The new system will involve both man and zone schemes, and smaller variations of basic plays to seize on matchup advantages.

Stevenson said Van Pelt and new running backs coach Taylor Embree have started with the basics in OTAs.

“(Van Pelt)’s putting those schemes up in front of us, giving us some time to learn ’em,” he said, “And we’re going on the field to try to perfect ’em.”

Looking ahead to the season, Stevenson asked for fans’ patience as the Patriots enter a new era with so many fresh faces and moving parts.

“Bear with us. We’re gonna try to get it right,”he said. “New people on the offensive side of the ball, new coaches, new scheme. We’re going to try to get it going.”
