Red Sox DH Masataka Yoshida leaves Sunday’s win with left hand injury
Red Sox designated hitter Masataka Yoshida was removed from Sunday night’s game after he was jammed on a pitch, injuring his left hand.
Yoshida said following the game that the injury happened during his first at bat. Though he came back out and singled his second time up, he was subsequently removed in favor of Rob Refsnyder.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Yoshida’s left hand was “suffering a bit,” but Yoshida said it’s too soon to tell if he’ll need to miss any time.
“It’s something we’ve got to wait and see,” Yoshida said via translator Yutaro Yamaguchi. “Wait until tomorrow and see what happens.”
Yoshida is not currently scheduled to get any X-rays.
The designated hitter had just returned to the Red Sox lineup on Saturday after sitting out an entire week due to a lineup crunch. Yoshida came off the bench in five straight games largely in order to help ease Tyler O’Neill and Rafael Devers back into the lineup following injuries, but on Saturday he returned to regular DH action after both O’Neill and Devers were ready to return to their usual positions.
Yoshida went 4 for 5 with a double and an RBI in Saturday’s 17-0 win, and on Sunday he went 1 for 2 his two times up. Overall Yoshida is batting .275 on the season.
