Red Sox lineups: Rafael Devers returns, Masataka Yoshida sits again

Rafael Devers is back in the Red Sox lineup for the first time since last Wednesday.

The Red Sox slugger is batting second and starting at designated hitter after missing the last five games due to knee discomfort. With Devers serving as DH, Masataka Yoshida once again finds himself the odd man out after sitting Tuesday in favor of the returning Tyler O’Neill.

This will be his third straight game out of the lineup overall, and though Yoshida’s playing time has taken a noticeable dip dating back to last week, Red Sox manager Alex Cora has told reporters he is not injured.

Instead it appears Yoshida is becoming something of a roster casualty. Given that the Red Sox have five superior defensive outfielders on their roster, Yoshida at this point is best suited as a designated hitter. The problem is that when Devers or another player is needed in that role, Yoshida winds up being squeezed out, which isn’t ideal given that he’s supposed to be one of the club’s top hitters and is only in the second year of a five-year, $90 million deal.

Offensively Yoshida’s gotten off to a slow start too, though he enjoyed one of his best games of the season last Saturday, going 3 for 4 with a home run in the club’s 4-2 win over Pittsburgh. Overall Yoshida is batting .250 with two homers and a .708 OPS on the season.

In addition to Devers, the Red Sox also have Tyler O’Neill back in left field for the first time since his collision last Monday. Jarren Duran will leadoff and play center field, Devers and O’Neill will bat second and third, and Wilyer Abreu will bat cleanup and start in right field. Ceddanne Rafaela will once again start at shortstop.

Cooper Criswell (0-1, 4.26 ERA) will start for the Red Sox against Cleveland’s Carlos Carrasco (1-1, 3.44). The game will be broadcast on NESN+, with Game 3 of the Bruins vs. Maple Leafs playoff series set to air on the main NESN channel.
