Report: Red Sox calling up LHP Cam Booser from Triple-A

One of the Red Sox most incredible minor league success stories is coming to the big leagues, as left-hander Cam Booser is reportedly being called up to the majors and will join the club ahead of this weekend’s series in Pittsburgh.

The move was first reported by MLB.com’s Ian Browne. Left-hander Joe Jacques is reportedly heading back to the Worcester Red Sox after being called up for the day and pitching 1.2 innings in Thursday’s loss to Cleveland. An additional move to clear space on the 40-man roster is also expected.

Booser, who is 31 years old, has never pitched in the majors and has followed a highly improbable path to the big leagues. A native of Tacoma, Washington, Booser suffered numerous significant injuries in high school and college and was suspended 50 games in 2015 after testing positive for marijuana. He retired in 2017 and spent two and a half years out of baseball working as a carpenter before making a comeback in 2020. He eventually earned another minor league opportunity after pitching for various semi-pro and independent teams and signed with the Red Sox as a minor league free agent in early 2023.

His first season with the Red Sox wasn’t anything special — he posted a 4.99 ERA over 57.2 innings in Worcester — but so far this spring he’s been lights out. Through his first four appearances he’s struck out 15 batters in only 6.2 innings while posting a 2.70 ERA and walking only one.

Now he’ll have a chance to realize a big league dream more than a decade in the making.
