With only a week of spring training remaining the Red Sox have made another batch of roster cuts, bringing the club closer to finalizing its Opening Day roster.

Monday morning the club announced it has optioned catcher Tyler Heineman and left-hander Joe Jacques to Triple-A and reassigned right-handers Chase Shugart and Justin Hagenman, left-handers Jorge Benitez and Cam Booser, infielders Nick Sogard, Jamie Westbrook and Nick Yorke, and infielder/outfielder Dalton Guthrie to minor league camp.

The Red Sox now have 42 players remaining in big league camp.

The most notable name among Monday’s cuts was Yorke, the Red Sox No. 8 prospect according to MLB Pipeline. Yorke was not considered a contender for the Opening Day roster but enjoyed an extended run with the big leaguers in camp, appearing in 15 games. He spent all of last season in Double-A and is expected to either start 2024 in Portland again or move up to Triple-A Worcester.

Among those still in big league camp are seven non-roster invitees, including left-handers Joely Rodriguez and Lucas Luetge, catchers Roberto Perez and Mark Kolozsvary, first baseman C.J. Cron, outfielder Mark Contreras and infielder/outfielder Eddy Alvarez. Of that group, Cron likely has the best chance of earning an Opening Day spot as the back-up first baseman, and one of Rodriguez or Luetge could conceivably join Brennan Bernardino as the second lefty in the bullpen.
