Nationals provide encouraging update on outfielder injured in fall against Red Sox
Saturday afternoon a frightening scene unfolded at JetBlue Park when Washington Nationals outfielder Daylen Lile fell over the right field wall into the Red Sox bullpen trying to make a catch and was carted off the field on a stretcher. He was subsequently taken to the hospital for further evaluation.
Nationals manager Davey Martinez provided an encouraging update on Lile’s condition Sunday, saying he’s already out of the hospital and back in West Palm Beach, and that all tests were negative and he’s been diagnosed with a lower back contusion. Lile is reportedly sore, but should be able to get back on the field once the pain subsides.
“I mean, he’s hurting. But he’s gonna be OK, which is great news,” Martinez told reporters Sunday. “We lucked out.”
Considering how serious the injury initially appeared, Sunday’s development was a best-case scenario and a huge relief for the 21-year-old prospect. Lile is currently the No. 6 ranked prospect in the Nationals organization according to MLB Pipeline, and having avoided a potentially career-ending injury he should have a bright future ahead of him.
