Red Sox injury updates: Masataka Yoshida to undergo MRI on left hand
Red Sox designated hitter Masataka Yoshida is set to undergo an MRI after injuring his left hand during Sunday’s win over the Chicago Cubs, manager Alex Cora said prior to Tuesday’s game.
“He saw a hand specialist and he’s going to get an MRI tomorrow,” Cora said. “So we’ll know more.”
Yoshida said he suffered the injury during his first at bat after he was jammed by a pitch, and he was subsequently removed from the game after singling in his second at bat. Yoshida had just returned to regular action after sitting five games due to Tyler O’Neill and Rafael Devers taking up the DH spot as part of their return from injury, and while Cora said he is officially active Tuesday night, he’s not likely to play for at least a few days and could potentially be sidelined again.
Tuesday brought another unexpected curveball as well.
Originally expected to make his Red Sox debut, Vaughn Grissom’s return was delayed after the new second baseman came down with the flu. Grissom has yet to play a game in a Red Sox uniform after suffering a series of injuries before and during spring training, and while his 20-day rehab assignment is due to expire on Wednesday, it could still be another day or two before he’s ready to be activated.
Nick Pivetta (right elbow flexor strain) is expected to make a rehab start in Worcester on Thursday, and barring any setbacks the expectation is he will be ready to return soon afterwards. The club is less optimistic about Garrett Whitlock (left oblique strain), who is playing catch but still not ready to begin throwing off a mound.
