A pack of vehicles drag racing and doing donuts in Boston’s Back Bay late at night was “not an isolated incident,” said a councilor who’s stressing the city must “be proactive in addressing these issues.”

Boston Police received a flood of 911 calls in the middle of the night, early Sunday morning, when 15 vehicles were reportedly drag racing and doing burnouts in the area of Dartmouth and Marlborough streets.

The cars were racing up and down Commonwealth Avenue as about 40 people were yelling and filming the races at around 2 a.m. on Sunday, the police report reads.

All of the vehicles doing donuts caused “the air to be filled with white smoke diminishing visibility,” according to the police report.

The police officers told everyone to leave the area. Meanwhile, cops spotted a glass bottle and fireworks tossed in their direction as they tried to reopen the road.

One of the officers ended up issuing five parking tickets to vehicles that were double parked on Commonwealth Avenue.

Following this past weekend’s drag racing, City Councilor Ed Flynn called on Boston Police to thoroughly investigate the incident.

“With the weather getting warmer, it is critical to take measures to address this type of dangerous racing and gatherings in our neighborhood streets,” Flynn wrote to Boston Police leaders on Monday.

“This is not an isolated incident,” he later added about the weekend incident. “Our city streets, and even highways, have seen drag racing, as well as dirt bikes and ATVs traveling in groups at dangerous speeds and blocking traffic, especially during the summertime.”

He noted the large late-night gathering last year near the Oxford Pappas property and South Boston waterfront.

“Residents in my district have long been concerned about dirt bikes, ATVs, and dangerous behavior with vehicles,” Flynn wrote. “As summer approaches, we need to be proactive in addressing these issues, perhaps keeping track of vehicles that are engaged in these illegal races, and seizing stolen vehicles that are engaged in these activities.”
