Boston College falls 2-0 to Denver in national championship hockey game
One of the greatest seasons in Boston College men’s hockey history has ended without a national championship.
The top-ranked Eagles, who set a program record with their 34th victory in defeating Michigan in a Frozen Four semifinal, came up just short in the national title game.
BC was blanked 2-0 by Denver University before 18,694 fans at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn., on Saturday night.
Held to just 12 shots through two periods, BC (34-6-1) threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Pioneers in the third. But goaltender Matt Davis was up to the challenge, rejecting all 23 of them to finish with a 35-save shutout.
Denver (32-9-3) scored the game’s lone two goals in the second period off shots by Tritan Broz at 9:42 and Rieger Lorenz at 15:16. Lorenz sent a wrist shot past BC freshman goaltender Jacob Fowler (24 saves) from the bottom of the left faceoff circle to make it 2-0.
