Letters to the editor: Herald readers sound off on top issues

Migrant influx

Kudos to the Boston Herald for pointing out the issue of migrants pouring into our large cities.  The Bay State and New York City’s “right to shelter laws” are getting well advertised and passed through word of mouth. NYC Mayor Eric Adams believes that housing unlimited migrants will “destroy the city.” Governor Kathy Hochul has even stated that the constant  flow of immigrants is “unsustainable.” Up here in our “sanctuary” state, Governor Maura Healey is trying to figure out where to place unhoused or homeless people when there aren’t any places left to go. Homeless advocates have filed a lawsuit forcing her to find beds that don’t exist and do it quickly.

When these so-called housing reforms and court orders came about  40 years ago, they clearly didn’t anticipate the destruction of our border control and the ongoing flow of migrants pouring into the Commonwealth and other communities across America.

We have a migrant crisis in this country and places like New York City and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts are both at wits’ end on how to manage and sustain a system that is no longer sustainable without much more help from the  federal government.

It is time for Blue State mayors and governors to stand up together with one voice or keep spending billions that they don’t have. Massive spending can only last so long before financial solutions become the complete ruin of us.

It is time for homeless advocates to smell the roses and understand no one can afford to fix these issues and you can’t force elected officials to spend money and use resources they don’t have.

Biden half-right

An article in the Oct. 30 issue of the Boston Herald quotes President Biden as saying “There’s no going back to the status quo as it stood on Oct. 6.”

On that, President Biden is absolutely correct. Unfortunately, he also seems to be pushing to return to the delusional mindset that brought us to that status quo ante by saying “It also means that when this crisis is over, there has to be a vision of what comes next, and in our view it has to be a two-state solution.”

The Palestinian leaders have repeatedly rejected proposals for the so-called “two-state solution” and the results of the Gaza experiment – giving the Palestinians full control of Gaza for the last 18 years – have ended most Israeli illusions that they could live with a sovereign Palestinian state in most of Judea and Samaria without a fundamental change in that society, a process that will take generations.

What President Biden should have said is “It also means that when this crisis is over, there has to be a vision of what comes next, how we can help create an environment where peace will eventually become possible.”

This will have to start with a process of “de-Hamasification,” not just in Gaza, but in the portions of Judea and Samaria that were turned over to the Palestinian Authority nearly three decades ago.

Harvard president

The second page in the Oct. 31 edition of the Herald should win a Pulitzer prize. Below a story about how a Harvard professor “compared a project promoting Jewish democracy to a project touting white supremacy” but was not reprimanded for such a reprehensible and moronic comment, ran a story with the headline “Harvard President Tackles Antisemitism,” which discusses Claudine Gay’s commitment “to tackling antisemitism on campus” by creating — hold on to your hats — an advisory board.

I think it would be more accurate to say that Ms. Gay missed a tackle. Maybe she should be playing for the 2023 Patriots.

Room for migrants

Maura Healey said there is no room left for new immigrants (“No Help,” 10/30/23). She is mistaken, there is plenty of room left for migrant “families.”

The solution: put a migrant family in every single household that voted for Maura Healey and Joe Biden. They knew exactly what was going to happen so now it is time for them to step up and take responsibility for their actions.

Another great place to put migrant families is in the homes of every congressman and senator in Massachusetts as well as the many, many wealthy donors who supported Maura Healey’s campaign.

In closing, we elect our politicians to solve problems and sometimes that means thinking outside the box.

Voting lists

Re: “Can dead people vote in your town?,” Oct. 28, 2023.

I’ve been in the mailing business for over 35 years and there is a great service that the United States Postal Service has had in place since I started my business. It’s called National Change of Address Service. I can take a client’s list and within an hour I can receive a list of people who have moved in the last year. In other words, it verifies that that person lives at that address. Now, why the Secretaries of State do not use this service to verify that people live at the address they claim to live at I’m not sure. It would eliminate much of the doubt written about in this article. It would also eliminate most voting fraud if, in fact, there is fraud (wink, wink).

MIAA

Once again the MIAA displays its unfairness regarding the football playoffs. Everett, the Greater Boston League champ with a record of 7-1, did not qualify for the postseason. The reason – their league opponents were weak according to the MIAA seeding system.

Why  does a team get penalized playing a weak league  schedule?
Recently, there have been others instances of this unfair practice.
It’s time for the MIAA to change this system for which one needs an MIT degree to understand.

Restore the meaning of the Thanksgiving games. Make a simple qualifying method for the post season . Giving out trophies to 128 schools for making post season play does not cut it.

Vets & Council

Re: “Vets Still Fuming at Council Boston Herald,” 10/31/2023

Assuming that Boston City Council members take an oath to best serve their constituents, how could the seven councilors who voted against the funding of almost $1 million in veterans’ services defend their decision?  Was their vote a protest against the military?  Do they hate veterans?  Or are they simply demagogues?

What is that oath of office worth if they deliberately act against the best interests of the same people they’re sworn to serve?  Do they even belong in public service?  I hope the voters of this city remember this gutless act when they go to the polls.

Expel students

Not only should pro-Hamas American students be expelled from their colleges, and non-citizen pro-Hamas students expelled from the country altogether, members of Congress spewing pro-Hamas sentiment should be expelled from Congress as well.  Members of the Squad such as Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, Ayanna Pressley, Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, Jamaal Bowman and Cori Bush peddling known untruths to mobs of angry rich indoctrinated children, legitimizing terrorism and demonizing one of our closest allies – Israel – with the power of their offices behind their words is worse than anything that happened on Jan. 6.
