Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story leaves game due to injury after diving attempt

Trevor Story has endured some terrible injury setbacks since signing with Boston, and Friday night it appeared he suffered another.

The Red Sox shortstop left Friday’s game with a shoulder injury after making a diving attempt on a hard hit ball to his right. Story was fully extended when he dove and stopped the ball but landed hard on his left shoulder and immediately began writhing in pain. He was quickly attended to by the trainer and came out with his arm hanging by his side.

The Red Sox announced shortly afterwards that Story was dealing with “left shoulder pain.”

Losing Story would be a colossal blow to a Red Sox team that has exceeded expectations through the first week of the season. Story’s defense has been a massive upgrade from what Boston got from the position last season, and earlier Friday he made an incredible running throw on a close play at first base.

At the time of his injury Story was 0 for 2 on the day with a .226 average on the season. Pablo Reyes was substituted into the game to fill his spot.
