William Delahunt, longtime Democratic congressman for Massachusetts, dies at 82
William Delahunt, a longtime Democratic congressman for Massachusetts, died Saturday, according to a family spokesperson.
Delahunt died at his home in Quincy surrounded by family, said George Reagan of Reagan Communications Group. Delahunt was 82.
“I lost the older brother I never had,” Reagan told the Herald, who added that losing him on Easter weekend gave him some solace.
Delahunt served Massachucsetts’ 10th Congressional District from 1997 to 2011. Before heading to Washington, he worked as the Norfolk County District Attorney for more than 22 years, where he developed the first prosecutorial unit on domestic violence and sexual assault cases.
He was a member of the House Judiciary Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and served as the chairman of the Subcommittee on Europe, among other designations. Delahunt was also a congressional delegate to the United Nations.
Delahunt earned a law degree from Boston College Law School in 1967 and a bachelors of arts from Middlebury College in 1963.
