Worcester police release new photos of suspect in murder of mom and her 11-year-old daughter, increase reward

Worcester police have released new photos of a fugitive wanted in connection with the murder of a mother and her 11-year-old daughter last week and doubled the reward for information leading to his capture.

Dejan Belnavis, 27, was identified as a suspect and is wanted on charges of armed assault to murder and carrying a firearm without a license in connection with the double homicide of Chasity Nunez, 27, and her daughter Zella Nunez, 11.

Police are now offering up to $10,000 for information that leads to his capture. Belnavis is considered armed and dangerous, and residents should not approach the suspect on their own, police said.

The U.S. Marshals poster describes Belnavis as 5 feet, 11 inches tall and about 160 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.

Chasity and Zella Nunez were found shot in a parked car after police received reports of gunshots in area of Lisbon Street and Englewood Avenue around 3 p.m. last Tuesday. Both were transported to a local hospital before being pronounced dead.

A day later, police reported they arrested Karel Mangual, 28, of Sterling Street in Worcester, in connection with the shooting. Mangual is charged with armed assault to murder and carrying a firearm without a license. He pleaded not guilty and was ordered held without bail.

Belnavis was identified as a second suspect later that night.

Police obtained surveillance footage showing two people walking towards the Nunezs in their car and start shooting, according to court documents reported by the Worcester Telegram & Gazette. The suspects then run back towards a white sedan police say Belnavis had been borrowing, the documents state, and the vehicle was later found in Hartford, Connecticut.

Police are urging anyone with information on Belnavis’s whereabouts to send an anonymous text to 274637 — writing the code “TIPWPD” and the message — or send an anonymous web-based message at worcesterma.gov/police. Residents can also report tips by calling the Worcester Police Detective Bureau at 508-799-8651.
