Lucas Giolito to undergo elbow surgery on Tuesday
Red Sox starting pitcher Lucas Giolito will undergo surgery on his right elbow on Tuesday, Alex Cora confirmed to reporters following Monday’s game.
The right-hander, Boston’s lone starting pitching spend this offseason, visited Dr. Jeffrey Dugas at Andrews Medical in Birmingham, AL on Monday after being diagnosed with a partial tear of his UCL and flexor strain.
Dugas and his team won’t determine a specific course of action until they open up the arm and evaluate the extent of the ligament damage. However, the various surgical options – internal brace, Tommy John – all guarantee that Giolito will miss several months, if not the entire upcoming season.
The Sox signed Giolito to a two-year, $38.5 million contract in early January, and expected him to be at or near the top of the rotation. Instead, the 29-year-old, who’d been so durable throughout his eight-year career, may not be in this year’s rotation at all.
