And the winner is…your Oscar-viewing party

Is your red carpet rolled out yet? It should be! After pretty much all of Hollywood was halted last year by work stoppages during strikes from the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA, things are finally back in full swing. And so are the Academy Awards.

The Oscars are set for tonight, which means that stylists all over Beverly Hills are now steaming satin, readying their fashion tape, and hiring security guards to watch over all that jewelry they’ve borrowed from Harry Winston for their celebrity clients.

So what do we do out here on the East Coast? Well, not quite that much. Beyond, of course, catching it on our screens and soaking up all the glorious drama, fashion, and glitz from home.

But how about joining in on the festivities with friends?

Here’s how to throw your own, last-minute very glam watch party.

The Red Carpet Question: Do you need one leading up to your front step? Answer: YES. Get one, and re-use it in years to come. Does it seem a little over the top? Of course! Pick up a crimson runner, and make sure it’s non-slip. Remember — this is the night of high heels.

Grab Some Air. One of the things every award winner wishes they had is more airtime at the mic. The next best thing is celebratory air in balloons. So decorate with balloons — and plenty of ‘em. They’re inexpensive, easy to find (just go to your local supermarket). Make them gold, and it’s even more festive for the Oscar-casion.

Champagne. This one’s so easy, it’s crazy. Do you splurge on Dom Perignon? Do you pass it? Let’s be real. Just put out fantastic vintage glasses and get a lovely $25 Prosecco and pour it when the winner’s category of your choice is announced.

Bites: Let’s be honest: For a last-minute affair, passed hors d‘oeuvres are just too darn high maintenance. So instead, make it a (far easier) buffet. But what to serve? For inspiration, look to The Vanity Fair Oscar Party, the A-List and invite-only shindig that takes place every year following the awards show. The celeb-packed afterparty is where all the stars finally let their hair down, imbibe, dance, and — yes, actually eat. Most of us here on East Coast time are too tired on a Sunday night to watch any footage, so we read about it the following day, but you can incorporate it into your main party by weaving in the kind of classic foods they serve. There are usually fancy fixings like truffles and caviar. But they also love burgers, plus, last year’s menu (designed by Chef Evan Funke) featured lasagna. So you’re well within your rights to serve up your favorite crowd-friendly version.

Get the looks ready. Here’s the question: Do you (and your guests) break out the semi-formal looks (because, honestly — even in the fanciest home, on a Sunday night in March it’s going to feel pretty silly to be wearing a ball gown); or do you do something super fun, like lean hard into Barbiecore gear to protest Greta Gerwig’s snub? All of that’s up to you… But either way, look for Ryan Gosling to sing “I’m Just Ken” live during this show, as at least one big homage to the film’s epic popularity.

An Oscar-viewing party isn’t complete without lots of balloons – and if you can get them in gold, all the better. (Metro Creative Services)
