Marblehead upsets Shawsheen to earn first Garden trip since 2011

STONEHAM — It was a team effort in every sense of the phrase for the Marblehead boys hockey team on Saturday at Stoneham Arena.

Whether it was blocking shots, killing penalties or getting a timely goal, it all came together for the Magicians as they stunned No. 2 Shawsheen, 2-1, to earn the program’s first state final berth since winning it all in 2011.

Not bad for a team that began the season 0-6 but has won 16 of its last 20 games since.

“We’ve been telling the kids that we are the team to beat,” Marblehead coach Mark Marfione said. “Yes, we were 0-6, but we knew that we had a good team and everything we were doing was fixable.”

Getting to the finish line on Saturday looked like it was going to be easy for Marblehead after London McDonald scored on a breakaway late in the second period to give the Headers the lead.

Marblehead then killed off a power play for the Rams to begin the third and held Shawsheen to one shot on goal as the clock ticked down.

Then like a tidal wave, the momentum changed when the Headers were called for too many men with 3:21 to go.

Leo Burdge (22 saves) came up with a pair of huge stops on the kill as the Rams were forced to pull Mike Cedrone for an extra skater with 1:45 left.

Moments later it looked like they were going to force overtime when Burdge got caught out of position and a loose puck was there for the Rams to put home. But defenseman Toby Grenier laid out on his stomach and made a remarkable save to keep the lead.

A penalty was called for delay of game on the play, giving Shawsheen a two-man advantage for the final 69 seconds but the Marblehead defense stood its ground and clinched the win.

“We knew that Shawsheen was going to be the team to beat for us to get where we wanted to go,” Marfione said. “They were a really good team.”
