Top-seeded Tewksbury gets rolling, skates past Auburn, 7-2
WOBURN — It took until halfway through the second period on Wednesday for the top seed in Division 2 to play like its normal self. But once Tewksbury got going, Auburn couldn’t stop the onslaught.
Tyler Bourgea had a hat trick and two assists while linemate Jeremy Insogna added two goals and two assists as the Redmen steamed into the semifinals with a 7-2 boys hockey win over the Rockets at O’Brien Arena.
“We didn’t have a very good first period, we came out a little slow but still had the lead,” Tewksbury coach Derek Doherty said. “It was great for us mentally because I felt like we were behind and had the lead.”
It was a seesaw affair for most of the first period and a half as the teams traded goals in the opening minutes before Matt Cooke’s 23rd goal of the year gave Tewksbury (20-3-0) a 3-2 lead after one.
The turning point of the game came midway through the second when the Redmen got a 1:02 two-man advantage and received goals from Insogna and Bourgea to break the game open.
Bourgea completed his hat trick with a shorthanded goal late in the middle frame to make it 6-2 before Insogna closed the scoring at 8:25 of the third with another power-play goal.
“We were able to make a couple of adjustments and played a really good second and third period,” Doherty said.
Tewksbury has now outscored its opponents 22-3 in three state tournament games.
