Jarren Duran removed from game in Red Sox 7-4 win over Rays

Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran was removed from Tuesday’s 7-4 win against the Tampa Bay Rays due to apparent ankle discomfort, but manager Alex Cora said the issue is nothing to worry about.

“He’s okay. His ankle is a little bit tight but that’s it. He’ll play on Thursday,” Cora told reporters postgame, according to MLB.com’s Ian Browne.

Duran’s status loomed like a cloud over what was otherwise a strong showing by the Red Sox, who racked up 10 hits as a team and got contributions from most of the projected starters.

Tyler O’Neill and Enmanuel Valdez in particular led the Red Sox offense, combining to drive in six of Boston’s seven runs. Valdez went 3 for 3 with three RBI, falling a home run shy of the cycle while tallying an RBI single, double and triple, and O’Neill went 2 for 2 with three RBI and a walk, including a two-run home run and an RBI double. Connor Wong also went 1 for 2 with an RBI single and Rafael Devers and Masataka Yoshida each hit a double.

Making his third start of the spring, Garrett Whitlock allowed two runs over three innings, giving up four hits with no walks and two strikeouts. Justin Slaten allowed an unearned run in his lone inning of work, Chris Murphy allowed two runs over one inning and Brennan Bernardino posted a scoreless seventh.

Noah Song, who is working to reestablish himself after spending nearly four years away from baseball to serve fulfill his U.S. Naval obligations, made his third appearance in a big league game. He pitched a scoreless ninth, striking out one with no hits or walks, to record his second save of the spring.
