New Car Preview: 2025 Mazda CX-70

Mazda is going all-in on a full lineup of SUVs and has brought us an all-new mid-size variant, the 2025 CX-70, a sleek and sporty variation of its larger sibling, the CX-90. While sharing much of the CX-90’s platform and design cues, the CX-70 carves out its identity with a focus on agility and a five-seater configuration (two-row), distinguishing it from the seven-seat layout of the CX-90.

Visually, the CX-70 exudes a sportier demeanor with a prominent black mesh grille, gloss black accents, and a more aggressive front bumper design compared to the chrome-laden CX-90. The rear bumper also receives a refreshing update with faux vents, adding a touch of dynamism to the overall aesthetic. However, some observers note a slight disconnect in the design language, particularly with the rounded roofline juxtaposed against the angular bodywork and triangular rear quarter windows.

Inside, the CX-70 mirrors much of the CX-90’s interior layout, albeit without the third-row seating option. Exclusive to the CX-70 is the option for striking red leather upholstery with black accents, adding a splash of personality to the cabin. Despite the premium feel, some critics point out areas of improvement, such as the inclusion of gray plastic trim with a printed carbon fiber motif, which detracts from the otherwise high-quality materials.

Technological enhancements abound in the CX-70, marking a milestone for Mazda as the first model to integrate Amazon Alexa into its infotainment system. This feature offers convenient voice control over various onboard functions and can sync with compatible smart home devices. Additionally, the CX-70 introduces Unresponsive Driver Support, a safety feature that intervenes if the driver fails to respond to escalating alerts, bringing the vehicle to a gradual stop in its lane.

Under the hood, the CX-70 boasts the same robust powertrain options as the CX-90, including a turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six engine in base trim or a high-output variant for added performance. A plug-in hybrid option is also available, combining a four-cylinder engine with an electric motor for enhanced efficiency and power delivery. With rear-biased all-wheel drive as standard, the CX-70 promises a dynamic driving experience across various terrains.

Despite its slightly shorter stature compared to the CX-90, the CX-70 maintains ample passenger space and offers a cavernous cargo area, thanks to the absence of a third-row seat. This makes it an enticing option for those seeking versatility and practicality without compromising on style and performance.

While pricing details are yet to be confirmed, the CX-70 is expected to offer a compelling value proposition, likely undercutting its larger sibling and competing models in the mid-size SUV segment. With its blend of sporty design, advanced technology, and versatile functionality, the 2025 Mazda CX-70 aims to make a bold statement in the crossover market when it arrives in dealerships later this year.
