Derrick White leads late surge as Celtics overcome flat start to beat Pelicans
Derrick White never panicked when he ran into a rare shooting slump over the last week. When his shots continued to brick off the rim Monday night, he continued to stayed calm.
Then the Celtics guard who’s been the face of “Hot Hands” commercials this year found them just in time.
White scored 17 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter right when the Celtics needed them. Without Kristaps Porzingis, the C’s again struggled to find their offensive footing. They were beyond flat in the first half. Shots weren’t falling once more. Jayson Tatum was turning it over. But then the C’s turned it on. White and Tatum willed the Celtics, who trailed by 11 in the fourth quarter, to an impressive comeback 118-112 victory over the Pelicans.
Tatum scored 26 points with 10 rebounds and eight assists, Jaylen Brown had 22 and Jrue Holiday scored 20. Sam Hauser contributed some crucial minutes off the bench. The Celtics overcame some insane shot-making from Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram to bury the Pelicans late with some stifling defense, and finally, hitting some shots. The C’s still have not dropped back-to-back games since November.
The C’s, who overcame a 17-point first-half deficit to take a lead late in the third quarter, let the Pelicans regain their advantage as they trailed by 11 early in the fourth. They were down eight when Tatum produced a poor sequence, which included his sixth turnover and followed by getting blocked at the rim. Joe Mazzulla called a timeout to rally his troops. Then they responded.
Hauser hit a 3-pointer, White, who started the game 1-for-9 from the field, dropped in a floater, and then he drilled a 3-pointer from the top of the key, turned and put his arms in the air as if to say, “Finally.” It forced a Pelicans timeout. The visitors recovered to take a brief lead, but then White and Tatum were too much down the stretch. White pulled up for another 3-pointer for a 99-98 lead, then forced a steal and Tatum flushed a dunk. White made a layup for a 104-98 lead and after Trey Murphy replied with a 3-pointer, White buried another triple.
After a Williamson layup, Al Horford converted a second-chance hook shot before Tatum forced a steal of Williamson before another dunk with 1:42 to go. After C.J. McCollum’s missed 3-pointer, Brown’s 3-pointer with 1:07 remaining sealed the win.
The Celtics continued to struggle mightily from 3-point range in the first half. Despite playing efficiently from two-point range, their clean looks from deep continued to miss in mystifying fashion. Payton Pritchard missed a wide-open corner 3-pointer that went off the top of the backboard. Jrue Holiday passed up an open layup and kicked out to an open Derrick White, who missed a corner triple at the halftime buzzer.
The C’s went 6-for-25 from long range in the first half. They trailed by as many as 17 and by 10 at halftime after they struggled to keep Ingram and Williamson from getting and making great looks. They weren’t doing the little things they have typically done to overcome poor shooting nights, like play strong defense and make extra efforts on the glass, with just one offensive rebound and two second-chance points in the first half.
