‘Extremely sweet’ Golden Retriever-mix found emaciated, MSPCA seeking help with identification
The MSPCA and Brookline Animal Control are looking for any information on a roughly three-year-old Golden Retriever-mix who was found emaciated in Brookline last week.
The dog, who the MSPCA staff call “Brooke,” was found near Newton Street and Clyde Street and brought in to the Angell Animal Medical Center on Wednesday afternoon, the MSPCA said in a release — “not a second too soon.”
“This dog was in bad shape when she came to us,” said Mike Keiley, vice president of the Animal Protection Division. “On a scale of one to nine, with one being extremely emaciated and nine being obese, she had a body condition score of one.”
Brooke was 10 pounds when she arrived and should have been at least 20, Keiley said. The hospital has put her on a “defined refeeding program.”
She has been stabilizing, he said, and the team is “optimistic” she may be able to leave the hospital early this week.

Staff has described Brooke as “extremely sweet,” in spite of the circumstances.
“It’s always hard to see loving animals like Brooke suffer so much,” Keiley said. “We want to know how it got to this point, and we need people’s help to do that.”
Anyone with information on the dog’s owner is encouraged to reach out to the MSPCA Law Enforcement and Brookline Animal Control.
