Gophers women’s hockey edges Mankato in overtime

Penny Hemp scored in overtime to lift the Gophers women’s hockey team to a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Minnesota State in a WCHA game in Mankato, Minn.

Minnesota (20-5-1, 14-5-1) swept the home-and-home series against the Mavericks (10-17-0, 4-16-0), winning Game 1 on Friday night 4-3 in Minneapolis.

The Gophers struck first on Saturday, with Josefin Bouveng scoring the first goal of the game late in the first period. Mankato scored midway through the third period to send the game to overtime, where Hemp ended it with her goal 54 seconds into the extra period.

Skylar Vetter made 15 saves in the Minnesota goal to secure the victory.

“Solid win here tonight,” Gophers head coach Brad Frost said. “Great to get a sweep on the road, with an overtime win tonight. Proud of our group and them finding a way, and we’re looking forward to next week.”

The Gophers will play host to St. Thomas for two games on Feb. 2-3 at Ridder Arena.

Minnesota swept St, Thomas in a two-game series in St, Paul on Oct. 13-14, winning 8-0 and 4-0.
