Jerod Mayo opens up about Patriots’ coaching searches

The Patriots plan to interview Rams tight ends coach and ex-Patriots assistant Nick Caley for their vacat offensive coordinator position Monday.

That news came courtesy of …  Jerod Mayo, the man running these interviews.

Mayo confirmed Caley’s interview during his morning appearance on WEEI, saying all interviews — including those for the defensive coordinator and special teams coordinator positions on his first staff — have been virtual.

“We’re just starting the process. They’ve all been Zooms so far,” Mayo said. “We’re going to bring in people this week. At the same time, you want to hire people that you like and are good at their job. The Zoom interviews are more philosophical questions, not really X’s and O’s.

“Then when they come in here, that’s when the X’s and O’s get going.”

According to Sports Illustrated, Rams quarterbacks coach/pass game coordinator Zac Robinson will interview for the job on Tuesday.

Mayo also confirmed he’s offered Bill Belichick’s sons, defensive play-caller Steve Belichick and safeties coach Brian Belichick, the chance to stay in New England. Bill Belichick interviewed twice for the Falcons’ head-coaching job last week, and could offer one or both of his sons a chance to work in Atlanta, should he get the job.

“We have a great relationship. They have the option to stay,” Mayo said of the younger Belichicks. “They also have the option to go with their father, if they want to. Still kind of going through it. I have a good relationship with both of them. They’re great coaches. We’ll see what happens.”

For his defensive coordinator job, Mayo has reportedly already interviewed Panthers linebackers coach Tem Lukabu, Saints linebackers coach Michael Hodges and Broncos defensive backs coach Christian Parker. Defensive line coach DeMarcus Covington remains a strong internal candidate for the position. To fill his special teams coordinator job, Mayo has reportedly targeted Falcons special teams coordinator Marquice Williams, ex-Giants special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey and Rams special teams assistant Jeremy Springer.
