Tom Mulherin’s high school hockey crystal ball

After a two-week struggle to clear up the weekly crystal ball’s vision over both sides of Hockeyland, we finally saw it come together to get back to a great prediction percentage.

King Philip’s upset win over Franklin was the only blemish in a 6-1 mark for the boys, as overtime comeback wins from Arlington (3-2 over Woburn) and Archbishop Williams (4-3 over Canton) fueled a big week. The Longmeadow and Winthrop girls proved the crystal ball wrong with meaningful wins, yet those and an Archbishop Williams tie against Malden Catholic were the only shortcomings in a 5-2-1 week.

Things are looking up. But to take a page from the Jake Vana/St. John’s Prep book of wisdom; this is the part where we need to get even better. The overall goal differential as of late has been on the higher side, and the purpose of this is to preview the top games of the week.

The rule of restricting teams in the crystal ball to one game per week hurts especially for the upcoming slate, as a wealth of these teams play multiple fellow top-25 teams this week. Here’s hoping we’re picking the right ones:

LAST WEEK’S RECORD: 11-3-2

OVERALL: 51-29-6

*WINNERS in all CAPS

BOYS

Monday

WINTHROP vs Essex Tech, 5:30 p.m. – Div. 4’s top-ranked team has answered every challenge, and that doesn’t change against the dangerous Hawks to remain unbeaten.

Wednesday

St. John’s Shrewsbury vs CATHOLIC MEMORIAL, 4 p.m. – Of the Knights’ four losses that count toward the power rankings, three have come against St. John’s Prep or Xaverian. CM catches the Pioneers in a bit of a slump, gets revenge for its only other loss.

HOPKINTON vs Dover-Sherborn/Weston, 6 p.m. – Overtime wins over Norwood and Medway shows D-S/Weston gives a strong fight in big Tri-Valley League matchups, but the Hillers stay unbeaten in league play.

Saturday

Pope Francis vs ARCHBISHOP WILLIAMS, 2 p.m. – Edging out the defending Div. 1 state champions at Olympia Center would mark the Bishops’ biggest win yet.

ST. JOHN’S PREP vs Xaverian, 2:20 p.m. – Round 2 between the two Div. 1 favorites. Should SJP beat Malden Catholic, sweeping the Hawks would give the Eagles a massive lead in the Catholic Conference race.

NORWELL vs Sandwich, 5:40 p.m. – The defending champion Clippers avenge their loss in the Jim Gormley Cup to split the season series. Both are projected to once again make a deep run in the Div. 4 state tournament.

Central Catholic vs WESTFORD ACADEMY, 6:45 p.m. – Big MVC/DCL I implications on the line here, with Central Catholic narrowly trailing Westford and Shrewsbury. The Ghosts keep up their winning ways for the season sweep despite a dangerous matchup.

CONCORD-CARLISLE vs Waltham, 8 p.m. – John Maguire’s Hawks give a strong challenge, but nobody has been able to beat Concord-Carlisle yet this year.

Sunday

Ed Burns Coffee Pot Tournament, all day – We won’t know the matchups until Thursday, but the exclusive public-school tournament always puts on a show with four games at two venues. Ed Burns Arena or Canton Ice House will be the places to be on Sunday.

GIRLS

Wednesday

Gloucester vs PEABODY/LYNN./NR, 4 p.m. – Gloucester has been a pleasant story to follow by surging to a 10-2-1 start. PLNR doubles-down its earlier shutout for the season sweep.

Pembroke vs DUXBURY, 5:50 p.m. – Two of the longest active win streaks in the state collide with big Div. 2 state tournament implications. Top-ranked Dragons (eight-game win streak) provide more proof why they’re the state’s top team despite a challenge from the Titans (10-game win streak).

METHUEN/TEWKSBURY vs Westford Academy, 6 p.m. – The Red Rangers will be charged to get back their loss to Westford Academy earlier this year.

Malden Catholic vs ST. MARY’S (L), 6 p.m. – It really could go either way between two of the best defenses in the state.

MILTON vs Natick, 7 p.m. – A quality Bay State Conference crossover bout. Milton keeps up its five-game winning streak to remain unbeaten in conference play.

Belmont/Watertown vs BURLINGTON, 8 p.m. – The red-hot Lady Red Devils have been giant killers. If anybody is to take down the last unbeaten team in the state, it would be fitting for it to be Burlington.

Friday

NOTRE DAME (H) vs Archbishop Williams, 6:50 p.m. – The Bishops catch NDA amid a nine-day layover between games for a rematch from the Tenney Cup, but the Cougars are well-versed in showing up big.

Saturday

LINCOLN-SUDBURY vs Shrewsbury, 6:20 p.m. – Never a good idea to give Frank Panarelli’s Colonials bulletin board material, but the Warriors are due for a big week coming off their first league loss since joining the MVC/DCL Large.
