As the Biden administration sees it, electric vehicles will drive America to an emissions-free, non-polluting, healthy climate utopia.

If only the dang things would start in cold weather.

Low temperatures are apparently the Achilles heel for EVs.

According to reports, Tesla owners in Chicago discovered their EVs’ batteries had died in sub-zero temperatures. Drivers also said some of Tesla charging stations weren’t working, or if they did work, the stations took longer than usual to charge up their vehicles.

“I’ve been here for over 5 hours at this point, and I still have not gotten to charge my car,” Tesla driver Brandon Welbourne told CBS Chicago. “A charge that should take 45 minutes is taking two hours.”

Granted, gas-powered cars can be a bear to start on frigid winter days — batteries are not fans of the cold. But jumper cables and a helpful neighbor will have you on the road in fairly short order.

Consumer Reports investigated how EVs dealt with cold weather last year, as they’re famous for efficiency dropping with the temps. “EVs definitely lose some of their driving range in extreme cold,” Scott Case, co-founder and CEO of Recurrent, a battery research firm, told CBS MoneyWatch.

You won’t hear that from the Green New Deal cheerleaders any time soon.

Joe Biden and Co. have been trying their best to get Americans behind the wheel of an EV since he took office. And while a $7,500 federal tax credit has gotten some to kick the tires, the cars aren’t flying out of the lots. As the New York Times reported, hybrid models are making a comeback as sales of EVs downshift.

This is no doubt infuriating to the progressive crowd that insists it knows what’s best for the country and everyone in it, if only people would do as it says.

If the winter continues with arctic snaps around the country and EV batteries charge at a glacial pace, it will be harder to paint the vehicles as vital purchases.

The topic, in fact, could be a non-starter.
