Belgium Full Year 2023: BMW X1 and Tesla Model Y top market up 30.1%

466,675 new cars hit Belgian roads in 2023, a 30.1% year-on-year surge which brings the market to its highest since 2020. BMW (+33.1%) confirms it is the favourite of Belgian car buyers for the third year running with an improved 10.6% market share. Volkswagen (+41.2%) follows like last year, seeing its share go up from 8.8% to 9.5%. Audi (+34.8%) also beats the market and bypasses Mercedes (+20.4%) and Peugeot (+0.7%) to rank #4. Renault (+32.1%) overtakes Toyota (+10.7%) to #6. Volvo (+63.2%) soars from #12 to #8 with Dacia (+34.2%) staying at #9. Below, BYD (+1263.4%), Lotus (+478.1%), MG (+432%), Tesla (+234.3%) and Cupra (+196.6%) sport fantastic year-on-year evolutions. 

Model-wise, the BMW X1 (+105.6%) deliver an outstanding performance, managing to take the crown off the Tesla Model Y which was #1 after 9 months. The X1 ends the year just 42 sales above the Model Y. The Dacia Sandero (+27.3%), leader last year, falls to #3 while the Volvo XC40 (+40.3%) drops to #4 despite a hearty lift. The Toyota Yaris is helped by Yaris Cross sales up to #5, distancing the Citroen C3 (+56.8%) and Mini Cooper. The Peugeot 308 (+11.4%) is down from #3 to #8 while the Audi A3 and Q3 both break into the Top 10. Notice also the Audi Q4 at #17 and the VW ID.4 at #18.

We also have access to the Top 5 models by region, fuel type and Top 10 by buyer type. The BMW X1 dominates Flanders ahead of the Tesla Model Y and Volvo XC40, Wallonia goes for the Dacia Sandero and Duster with the Jogger also making it into the Top 5 and Brussels favours the Citroen C3 ahead of the Peugeot 308. The Dacia Sandero dominates petrol sales above the Citroen C3, diesel goes to the BMW 1 Series ahead of the Peugeot 308, the best-selling PHEVs are the BMW X1 and Volvo XC60, the Toyota Yaris tops HEV sales ahead of the Toyota Corolla and Renault Austral. Fleet sales are dominated by the BMW X1, Tesla Model Y and Volvo XC40 while private buyers go for the Dacia Sandero and Toyota Yaris.
