Janet Jackson to return to Xcel Energy Center in June

Janet Jackson had such a good time on tour last year, she’s hitting the road again this summer, with a June 18 stop planned at St. Paul’s Xcel Energy Center.

Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday through Ticketmaster. Neither the venue nor the promoter announced ticket prices. R&B star Nelly will open.

The youngest member of her famous family began her career at the age of 7, performing at the MGM Casino in Las Vegas with her sisters. She went on to find work in TV with roles on “Good Times,” “Diff’rent Strokes” and “Fame.”

She recorded a pair of teen pop albums before hooking up with Minneapolis producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis for 1986’s “Control.” It gave Jackson her first string of hits, including “What Have You Done for Me Lately,” “Nasty,” “Control,” “When I Think of You” and “The Pleasure Principle.”

For the next 15 years, Jackson remained a constant presence on the radio. Her career stalled after her infamous appearance on the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show when, during a dance sequence with Justin Timberlake, she experienced a “wardrobe malfunction” that briefly exposed her breast on live television.

In 2015, she returned to the road for her first arena tour since 2008 and played Target Center that November. Four years later, Jackson headlined an outdoor concert at Treasure Island Casino.

Jackson headlined the X for the first time in May 2023 and played a set with 40 songs, many of which were shortened or jammed into medleys.

According to Live Nation, Jackson’s 2023 tour was her highest-grossing to date and included 36 sold-out shows. Her 2024 dates mark Jackson’s 50th year in entertainment.
