Twins legend Joe Mauer’s Hall of Fame support holding strong
Joe Mauer’s chances of getting into the Baseball Hall of Fame on the first ballot when voting results are announced on Jan. 23 remain high with the St. Paul native having garnered support on more than 80 percent of publicly-revealed ballots.
Mauer currently has received a vote on 84 percent of those ballots, per X user (@NotMrTibbs) Ryan Thibodaux’s tracker. As of Saturday morning, Thibodaux estimated about 40.6 percent of ballots were known. That would mean the former Twins catcher would need support on at least 68.9 percent of the remaining ballots to reach the necessary 75 percent threshold for entry.
Mauer,a three-sport star at Cretin-Derham Hall, is currently the second-highest vote-getter of this year’s cycle, behind Adrián Beltré (98.7 percent), who is also on the ballot for the first time.
Todd Helton (83.3), Billy Wagner (80.1) and Gary Sheffield (75.0) are also currently at 75 percent or above as of Saturday morning, though it’s unlikely that all five make it in as the voting tendencies of writers who wish to remain anonymous are often different than those who opt to make their ballots public ahead of time and players often finish with a lower percentage than they had publicly when all votes are counted.
Voting ended in December and the results will be revealed during a televised show on MLB Network later this month. If Mauer makes it, he would be the fourth hall of famer from St. Paul, joining a group that includes his former Twins manager, Paul Molitor, along with Jack Morris and Dave Winfield.
