North Andover gets measure of revenge, tops Needham, 62-47

NORTH ANDOVER — North Andover showed that its prowess stretched outside the Merrimack Valley.

Led by four scorers in double figures, highlighted by Niko Catalano’s 13 points, No. 3 North Andover defeated No. 9 Needham, 62-47, on Thursday night at North Andover High School.

The win provides a bit of revenge for North Andover, which fell in last year’s Division 1 state semifinal to the Rockets.

Alongside Catalano, Cam Bethel (11), Jake Saalfrank (11) and Zach DesRochers (10) scored in double figures for North Andover. It was an impressive output for the hosts considering Needham held Boston Herald Dream Teamer Zach Wolinski to three points.

Wolinski is now 14 points away from 1,000 for his career.

“Needham is a different team and we’re a different team,” North Andover coach Paul Tanglis said. “We know they’re a terrific team. They’re very fundamentally sound. We had to share the ball and we did.”

Despite being face guarded, Wolinski made his impact by dishing out eight assists to go with eight steals.

“Zach (Wolinski) takes what the defense gives him. It speaks to our unselfishness as a team,” Tanglis said. “To score 62 points against Needham you have to be unselfish.”

North Andover controlled play for most of the game. After being up 18-14 after one, the hosts got separation. Defensively, the Scarlet Knights forced six Needham turnovers in the second quarter and at the other end Saalfrank scored eight of his points to put North Andover up 30-19 at the half.

North Andover extended its lead up to 46-31 on consecutive baskets by Angel Sanchez but a 7-0 run by the Rockets trimmed the deficit to nine with 5:50 remain.

The Scarlet Knights, however, refused to be denied. Bethel drilled a triple and finished at the cup before DesRochers scored four of his own to put the game on ice.
