Marcus Smart to miss Celtics return game after suffering finger injury

Marcus Smart’s return game in Boston will have to wait a year.

The former Celtics guard, who was traded to the Grizzlies last summer, will miss at least six weeks after suffering a severe injury to his right ring finger, the team announced on Thursday. Under that timeline, Smart will miss the Feb. 4 matchup between the Grizzlies and Celtics at TD Garden.

Smart was diagnosed with a rupture of the proximal interphalangeal joint central. He suffered the injury during the third quarter of the Grizzlies’ win over the Mavericks on Tuesday night.

The injury continued a difficult first season for Smart in Memphis, where he missed 17 games earlier this season due to a foot injury, including the first matchup against the Celtics in November. He returned to play nine games before the finger injury. He was averaging 14.5 points and 4.3 assists per game for the Grizzlies, who have a 14-23 record and also lost star guard Ja Morant to a season-ending injury earlier this week.

Smart played nine seasons in Boston, which included a run to the 2022 NBA Finals as he became a fixture of the franchise before being shockingly traded in a three-team deal that sent Kristaps Porzingis to the Celtics last June. His return to Boston in three weeks was expected to be an emotional, though it’s still certainly possible he travels with the Grizzlies for that game and is still honored by his former team.
