Did Joe Mazzulla send subtle message with hilarious ‘The Town’ reference?

If you asked someone to describe Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla, most would probably call him “stoic” or “reserved,” definitely not the type to randomly crack jokes in public.

Which made the end of his press conference prior to Wednesday night’s game that much more surprising.

As he was about to walk off the podium after taking questions for about five minutes, Mazzulla stopped and rhetorically asked the assembled media why they’d never asked him a particular question.

“You know, nobody has ever asked me about my favorite scene from The Town,” Mazzulla said. “I know you guys know it’s my favorite movie.”

Asked if it’s the bank robbery scene, and Mazzulla said no. That’s his second favorite scene.

“My favorite part is when MacRay is getting ready to leave town and he skips by the FBI guy’s car and leaves a nice, well thought out, handwritten note underneath the antenna and then skips out of town,” Mazzulla said. “That’s my favorite scene.”

For those who have never seen ‘The Town,’ MacRay is the bank robber played by Ben Affleck, and the note he leaves for the FBI agent, well, let’s just say he tells the guy to take a hike.

Why was Mazzulla compelled to share this particular movie take seemingly out of nowhere? It was so random and out of character that it couldn’t have been just a spur of the moment musing, right?

Maybe the rest of the press conference could’ve offered some clues.

The majority of Wednesday’s pregame session dealt with the fallout from Monday’s controversial loss to Indiana and to the league’s subsequent Last 2-Minute Report confirming two incorrect calls went against Boston in the final seconds. Mazzulla was also asked about Toronto Raptors coach Darko Rajaković, who went scorched earth on the officials after the Los Angeles Lakers were awarded 23 foul shots in the fourth quarter during the team’s 132-131 loss on Tuesday, and whether he enjoyed seeing another coach let it rip.

Mazzulla took the high road throughout his remarks, saying the Celtics needed to play better in the third quarter and not dwell too much on tough losses like Monday’s, but is it possible the movie reference was a subtle jab at the league? Something a little less obvious than Rajaković’s viral rant?

Maybe, or maybe not. But at the very least it was certainly memorable, that’s for sure.
