Wild wiped out in another loss to another division rival

Marc-Andre Fleury showed fans at Xcel Energy Center on Monday some of his best, making the kinds of saves that have defined a career that will all but certainly put him in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

But the veteran one win away from taking sole possession of second place on the NHL career list will have to wait a little longer because Dallas goaltender Matt Murray, a rookie making his first start this season, was perfect.

Roope Hintz and Radek Faksa scored shorthanded goals, and Jason Robertson iced it with a power play goal in the third as the Dallas Stars won a big game between Central Division rivals, 4-0, at Xcel Energy Center.

It was another blow to the postseason hopes of Minnesota, which has been playing better since John Hynes became coach on Nov. 28 but remains buried in the Western Conference standings — and is 0 for 3 in big division games against Winnipeg and Dallas over the previous two weeks.

The Wild were swept by the first-place Jets in back-to-back games on Dec. 30-31, and the Wild and third-place Stars are set to play again Wednesday in Dallas.

With Jake Oettinger sidelined by a lower body injury since Dec. 15, the Stars recalled Murray last week and put him in net Monday for his fourth career start. He made 23 saves, 12 in a first period in which the Stars were outshot, 12-4.

Minnesota 0 for 6 on power plays — including 47 seconds with a two-man advantage in the first period — and gave up shorthanded goals to Roope Hintz in the first and Radek Faska in the third. The Stars cashed in on one of their two power play chances.

Tyler Seguin scored an even strength goal early in the third period for a 2-0 lead and the game unraveled on the Wild from there.

Fleury, stuck tied with Patrick Roy with 551 career wins, made 17 saves for the Wild, who are slowly getting their key players back from injury. Mats Zuccarelllo returned from a nine-game injury absence in last Saturday’s 4-3 overtime victory at Columbus, and Marcus Foligno returned Monday from a three-game absence to deepen the lines for the Wild.

But the Wild clearly miss Kirill Kaprizov, out with a lower body injury since being cross-checked in the lower back by Brenden Dillon on Dec. 30. Kaprizov still leads the team with 34 points (13-21–34).
