Jo Koy’s awkward Golden Globes monologue makes celebs squirm

Comedian Joy Koy got Sunday’s Golden Globes award ceremony off to a rocky start and went off-script from his monologue to defend himself when he felt the room wasn’t responding to his jokes.

“I got the gig 10 days ago! You want a perfect monologue? Yo, shut up,” he said during his opening monologue. “You’re kidding me, right? Slow down. I wrote some of these, and they’re the ones you’re laughing at.”

Many of Koy’s jokes took direct aim at certain celebrities in the audience, many of whom looked unamused when the camera cut to their reactions.

“My New Year’s resolution is to finish “Oppenheimer” in 2025, Koy said, poking fun at the three-hour-long film before cameras showed director Christopher Nolan forcing a smile in the audience.

Another joke compared the size of Bradley Cooper’s prosthetic nose in “Maestro” to the size of Barry Keoghan’s genitalia in “Saltburn.”

Cooper could be seen trying to muster an uncomfortable smile, after much of the conversation surrounding his film has been mired in the possible antisemitic symbolism in the facial prosthetic.

“I told you I didn’t write all of these. That one’s not mine,” Koy blurted out, after a joke about “The Crown” didn’t land moments later.

He also repeatedly apologized to the crowd. “I’m sorry about that,” he said after a joke about Robert De Niro, who recently fathered a child last year at nearly 80 years old.

After the first couple awards, Koy made another joke about Taylor Swift being shown on camera at NFL games more than the award ceremony, to which Swift was noticeably stone-faced when the cameras panned to her.

The 52-year-old standup comedian is hosting the event for the first time, and has been outspoken about the fact that he wasn’t offered the job until just two weeks beforehand.

“I woke up and went, ‘Wait a minute. I have two weeks to write jokes!’” Koy told NBC News.

“Actually, I think I had less than two weeks because I didn’t get my writers until five days later,” he adds. “When Tiny [Fey] and all those other hosts got the gig, they had months to prepare. I’m literally looking at just days! It’s been a crash course in hosting.”

Koy, who is of Filipino descent, is only the second Asian host in Golden Globes history, following Sandra Oh leading the awards in 2019.

His credits include his Netflix specials “Live from the Los Angeles Forum” and “Comin’ in Hot,” as well as his 2022 semi-autobiographical flick “Easter Sunday.”

The Globes, often jokingly referred to as “the Drunk Oscars” for its boozy and flashy energy, kicked off at 8 p.m. EST on Sunday night, honoring the best in film and television across 27 categories.
