Gophers men’s basketball, new coach Niko Medved open with win against NDSU

Cade Tyson scored a game-high 28 points as the Minnesota Gophers men’s basketball team opened coach Niko Medved’s first season with an 80-54 exhibition win against North Dakota State on Thursday at Williams Arena.

Jaylen Crocker-Johnson added 11 points and Isaac Asuma scored 10 for Minnesota, which outscored the Bison 45-28 in the second half. Robert Vaihola had eight points and a game-high 14 rebounds for the Gophers.

Tyson, a senior in his first season for Minnesota after playing for North Carolina and Belmont, hit 9 of 16 from the field and was 6 of 9 from 3-point territory while drawing the start at forward.

The Gophers host North Dakota in another exhibition on Oct. 25.
