Carlos Narváez to undergo knee surgery, Red Sox announce
Carlos Nárvaez will undergo knee surgery this week, but the Red Sox expect him to be ready for spring training.
Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow made the announcement on Monday, during the club’s end-of-year press conference.
“Narvi is going to have his meniscus cleaned up,” Breslow said. “This should be a pretty straightforward procedure, and (we) don’t anticipate any issues.”
The Red Sox acquired the rookie catcher from the New York Yankees last December. After an early-season injury to Connor Wong, Narváez stepped into the everyday catching role. He caught 112 regular-season games, including 106 starts. He led the majors with 58 assists and 32 runners caught stealing. He ranked in MLB’s 80th percentile or better in Fielding Run Value, Blocks Above Average, Caught-Stealing Above Average, Framing, and Pop Time.
Batting in 118 games, Narváez hit .241 with a .726 OPS, 97 hits, 27 doubles, 15 home runs, 51 runs and 50 RBI.
“There were a couple times during the course of the season where it flared up,” Breslow added. “He deserves a ton of credit for his willingness to play through this, you know, potentially even at a time when others would have maybe bowed out.”
