Alex Cora on Red Sox rotation changes: ‘Moving pieces right now’

After impressing in his big-league debut last Friday, left-hander Payton Tolle will take at least the next turn in the Red Sox rotation.

The organization’s top pitching prospect impressed despite the no-decision; over 5.1 innings he yielded two earned runs on three hits. Tolle walked two and struck out eight, making him the first Red Sox pitcher with at least eight strikeouts in his MLB debut since Daisuke Matsuzaka on April 5, 2007, and just the fifth overall in franchise history.  At 22 years and 301 days old, Tolle was also the youngest Red Sox starter to debut since Eduardo Rodriguez over a decade ago (May 28, 2015), and one of the 35 youngest starting pitchers to debut in franchise history; notable names on the list include Jon Lester, Roger Clemens, Babe Ruth, and Smokey Joe Wood.

“He’s going to pitch Friday and then we’ll decide from there,” Cora announced Tuesday afternoon. “But we see him as a starter… It’s just, he hasn’t pitched in a regular rotation, so we have to take care of him.”

Cora also announced a temporary move to the bullpen for Dustin May, but was noncommittal when discussing the pitching plan for Wednesday.

“He’ll start again next week. So, we’re just moving pieces right now,” Cora explained. “We’re here in the day-to-day business now. So take care of today and then we’ll decide tomorrow.”

Left-hander Kyle Harrison departed the club’s Triple-A ballpark in Worcester for Boston early Tuesday afternoon, but as of 6:15 p.m. ET the situation remained in flux.

“I haven’t looked at it,” Cora said when asked about the reports on Harrison. “We haven’t made a decision yet. We’ll see where we’re at after the game, and then we’ll decide what we do tomorrow.”

According to multiple sources, Harrison is a candidate to pitch for the Red Sox tomorrow. Tommy Cassell of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, however, reported the lefty “has been nursing a left ankle injury” and could potentially undergo an MRI in Boston before the club made a decision.

Despite several starters struggling this season, including Tanner Houck (Tommy John surgery) and Walker Buehler, whom the Red Sox released on Friday, the starting rotation entered Tuesday with a 3.69 ERA that ranks fifth in the majors. It’s a significant improvement from their rankings at the end of the last three seasons: 17th (’24), 21st (’23), and 25th (’22).
