Celtics waive 2024 draft pick after win over Nuggets
Anton Watson’s Celtics tenure came to an end Sunday.
Boston waived the 2024 second-round draft pick shortly after its 110-103 win over the Denver Nuggets at TD Garden.
Watson was on a two-way contract, and though he was in uniform for Sunday’s game, he has yet to make his regular-season NBA debut. All of the Gonzaga product’s minutes this season have come in the G League, where he averaged 12.1 points and 5.1 rebounds across 37 appearances with Maine. The 6-foot-8 forward shot 44.1% from the field and 31.9% from 3-point range.
The NBA’s deadline to sign players to two-way deals is March 4, so releasing Watson allows Boston to add another player for the stretch run. Drew Peterson and JD Davison occupy the Celtics’ other two two-way slots.
The Celtics also have one open spot on their 15-man roster after swapping out Jaden Springer for Torrey Craig at last month’s trade deadline.
First-round rookie Baylor Scheierman, drafted 30th overall last summer, has played sparingly for the big club, logging 90 NBA minutes across 15 appearances this season.
The Celtics will host the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday.
