Scituate rolls past Hingham, remains unbeaten

SCITUATE — If your football team has the pleasure of heading to Gillette for an upcoming Super Bowl, one of the few pitfalls coaches must deal with is whether or not to play their starters on Thanksgiving morning.

Herb Devine and his staff at Scituate were faced with the predicament again, but had no plans on switching things up. Senior wideout Roman Glowac finished with four receptions for 35 yards and a trio of touchdowns, earning game MVP honors, as the Sailors erupted for a 37-7 drubbing of longtime rival Hingham.

“For us, that was never in question,” said Scituate quarterback Jonny Donovan. “For us and Hingham, this is a big rivalry every year. This game means a lot to us. There is obviously a big history between us and Hingham. There was never a question of whether we were playing or not. We practiced, and we took the game like we would any other game, just like we’re going to take the Super Bowl. We executed, and we did well.”

Donovan finished 12-for-16 passing with 230 yards and four touchdowns for Scituate (12-0) and the Sailors came to life in the second quarter.

After a sluggish opening frame, Willy Robinson corralled a screen pass from Donovan, then picked his way through the defense en route to a 38-yard touchdown as Scituate took a 7-0 lead. They would extend their advantage following a botched fake punt by Hingham shortly thereafter, as Donovan fired a dart to Glowac for a 6-yard touchdown strike to make it 14-0 with 10:10 left in the half.

Scituate was only getting started. Another Glowac touchdown and the Sailors had hung 35 points on the Harbormen (6-5) in the stanza alone. From there, they were able to coast in the second half as torrential rain began to fall.

“Trust me, it’s not a spot I’m complaining about to be in, about making that decision and not being able to sleep last night thinking about what-ifs,” said Devine. “It’s not a fun place to be. You have a chance to win a state championship, and you have to worry about this game. It’s not easy. When you’re not playing for anything but pride, it’s tough. It’s one thing if you have a league title or something to play for, that’s one thing … but luckily, we got out of it healthy. Now, it’s about turning the page. Let’s get focused on our opponent.”

Hingham got on the board late in the third quarter, as junior Jake Varholak hit sophomore J.T. Reale for a 72-yard touchdown. Fin O’Brien was named Harbormen MVP after finishing with a pair of interceptions.

Scituate now looks ahead to the Div. 4 Super Bowl next Thursday. For the third time since the MIAA introduced its new football playoff format, the Sailors will clash with Patriot League rival Duxbury.

“We scrimmaged them early in the year,” said Donovan. “We’ll watch some film like we do with every team, see what they run. Then, we’ll go out and execute.”
