Patriots swap center for linebacker on practice squad as trade deadline passes
The Patriots made a change to their practice squad on the day of the NFL trade deadline.
They signed linebacker Monty Rice to the practice squad and released center Bryan Hudson. This move was made in addition to signing guard Tyrese Robinson off of the Vikings’ practice squad and releasing guard Zachary Thomas from the 53-man roster.
Rice, 25, was a third-round pick out of Georgia by the Titans in the 2021 NFL Draft. He’s also spent time with the Saints and Falcons. Hudson signed to the Patriots’ practice squad before Week 1. The undrafted rookie was elevated for one game this season but didn’t play.
Rice has played 35 career games with 10 starts. He has 128 tackles, five tackles for loss, three QB hits and two pass breakups.
The Patriots have five linebackers on their 53-man roster in Christian Elliss, Curtis Jacobs, Raekwon McMillan, Sione Takitaki and Jahlani Tavai plus Joe Giles-Harris on their practice squad.
The Patriots have two centers, Ben Brown and Lecitus Smith, on their 53-man roster.
