Hallmark+ decks the halls with crime in ‘Mistletoe Murders’

The all-new Hallmark+ murder mystery “Mistletoe Murders” offers a little bit of homicide with a somewhat scary Christmas-y vibe.

“Mistletoe Murders” is a six-episode series. “It’s our first season, hopefully of many,” said Sarah Drew, 44, in a Zoom interview. “We’re putting all the prayers out there.

“It started as an Audible podcast series that is still going. It just dropped its third season right now. From the same creator who did the amazing television series as well.

“So,” said this “Everwood” and “Grey’s Anatomy” veteran, “when I got the offer and read the script, I fell madly in love with it. It’s so fun! It’s combining two very beloved genres, the mystery genre and the Christmas genre, putting it together into this beautiful Christmas noir-cozy Christmas mystery, with a lot of action and adventure and comedy and romance. The show’s got everything.”

As for her character Emily Lane, “She is fascinating, a multi-dimensional character that I’ve just I’ve had a blast getting to play.”

Is Emily an amateur detective in terms of the series’ murder mystery aspect?

“Yes, on the surface,” Drew explained. “She runs a Christmas shop that’s open all year round. She loves Christmas! And she’s just moved to this tiny little town. But when somebody dies who is important to her, she puts on her sleuthing hat.

“You realize she has skills that she should not possess as a general retailer. And we start to get some, like breadcrumbs, of her past life.

“Where is she coming from? It makes you question all the way through the season: Who is Emily Lane? Is she running from someone? Something? Is she running toward someone? Something? What is her story?

“We get little, tiny snippets and we have a real sense of danger in the midst of all of the crime solving that she does.

“So, yes, in some ways she is an amateur sleuth. But in other ways, she has skills that would make her the best sleuth of all.”

On a practical level, how does running a year ‘round Christmas shop work in July, August, September? Does anyone actually shop then?

“Yes,” Drew emphatically replied. “Talk to my stepmother-in-law, because she shops at Christmas, she shops all year round.

“And you get the best deals on Christmas stuff when you go in June or July. And some people stay decorated all year round. I don’t begrudge anyone any of it, because ‘tis the season.

“It is a beautiful time of year. Why not extend it through the whole year?”
