Tuesday’s high school roundup/scores: Field hockey, volleyball pairings delayed by court injunction

The release of the statewide field hockey and girls volleyball pairings will be delayed 24 hours after a temporary court injunction was issued in favor of the Hampden-Wilbraham school district and individual student plaintiffs.

According to an MIAA release, they received the notice Monday afternoon. Since the order was issued without the ability for the MIAA to be heard, the organization requested and was granted the opportunity to be heard by the judge.

Since a final verdict in favor of the school would have ramifications on the seeding process and the clear and accurate release of the state tournament brackets, the MIAA opted to postpone the release for at least 24 hours.

In the release, the MIAA claims the school district admitted to failing to comply with MIAA protocols and feels it is wrong that these potential ramifications would have an adverse effect on the vast majority of member schools across the state that did follow the prescribed process.

The injunction is the result of an agreement made between the MIAA and the Pioneer Valley Interscholastic Athletic Association after several PVIAC schools did not input their schedules correctly. Schools were required to have full schedules, including TBA games for the Western Mass. Tournament, on their schedule by Sept. 13.
