Bruins lose lead, then game in OT to Utah, 2-1

The Bruins coughed up a late one-goal lead and then fell to the Utah Hockey Club at the Delta Center in overtime, 2-1, in their inaugural trip to St. Lake City.

The hope is that the offseason lineup changes would have made the B’s better equipped these games, but they did not play well for most of the night and were fortunate to get a point.

On the first shift of overtime, David Pastrnak took a tripping penalty on Clayton Keller. The B’s killed it off but, seconds after Pastrnak stepped out of the box, Michael Kesselring ripped a wrist shot past Jeremy Swayman’s glove for the winner at 2:46 into OT.

Utah started to gain momentum through the course of the a scoreless first period, spurred several Bruins turnovers on breakout attempts, two by Mason Lohrei.

The B’s had the first power play off Brad Marchand’s league-leading ninth drawn penalty but they could not cash in. Utah finishe doff the period on their own power play and zipped the puck around well but could not convert on a couple of available one-timers.

Utah had 10-7 shot advantage in the first, thanks in great part to the B’s 11 giveaways.

Utah got the first power play of the second period and had a good shot when Josh Doan broke in on he right wing but Jeremy Swayman turned away the good shot.

And at 12:49, the B’s got on the board first from what is becoming a familiar source. Brad Marchand grabbed a loose puck off a Brandon Carlo blocked shot and took off on a rush with Cole Koepke during a line change. The captain dished to Koepke on his off wing and, from the right circle, Koepke zipped a wrister between Connor Ingram’’s pads on for a goal the Utah netminder would want back. It was Koepke’s team-leading sixth point.

On the very next shift, Koepke’s speed drew another Utah penalty, but the B’s could not capitalize on the man advantage. In fact, they were fortunate to maintain their lead. In a shorthanded bid, Michael Kesselring whistled a shot off the inside of the far post and it bounced just wide.

The B’s ended the period on the penalty kill and needed a great Swayman save to preserve the lead. Barrett Hayton tipped a Dylan Guenther shot and it appeared as though the bouncing puck was destined to go over the goal line, but Swayman reached behind to him to smother it.

Utah appeared to tie it up at 6:54 of the third, but it was not to be. Marchand, trying to make something out of nothing, turned it over high in the offensive zone and Utah took off on a rush. Swayman made one terrific save but Kailer Yamamoto was there to put back the rebound. But the B’s challenged for offside and the review revealed that Yamamoto entered the zone before the puck. It didn’t spare Marchand from getting an earful from coach Jim Montgomery for the nearly costly turnover.

The B’s did not make the best out of the reprieve, however.

With 5:09 left in regulation, Utah finally evened it. Vladislav Kolyachonok got behind Carlo to catch a Nick Schmaltz pass and beat Swayman on a pretty backhand roof job.
