Celtics sign former local high school star ahead of roster deadline

The Celtics added some Massachusetts flavor to their roster after wrapping up their preseason schedule.

Boston on Wednesday signed undrafted rookie forward/center Hason Ward to an Exhibit 10 contract, his agency announced on X.

In a corresponding move, the Celtics released center Dimrytro Skapintsev, according to a report from Spotrac’s Keith Smith.

Ward was raised in Barbados but played his high school ball at Springfield Central, where he averaged 10.5 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game as a senior. The 6-foot-9, 230-pound big man once blocked 22 shots in a single game for the Western Massachusetts power before beginning a college career that included stints at VCU and Iowa State.

Last season, Ward came off the bench for a Cyclones team that reached the Sweet 16, tallying 6.0 points, 3.8 boards and 1.2 blocks per game while shooting 62.8% from the floor. He was not an outside scoring threat, with just 13 attempted 3-pointers and zero makes over his five collegiate seasons.

After going undrafted, Ward played for the Sacramento Kings in the California Classic Summer League.

Given the timing of his signing, the Celtics almost certainly plan to send Ward to their G League affiliate in Maine. That’s also the most likely destination for their other players on E-10 contracts (Lonnie Walker IV, Ron Harper Jr. and Jay Scrubb) or two-way deals (Drew Peterson, JD Davison and Anton Watson).

Boston has one open 15-man roster spot but seems likely to leave it vacant entering the regular season, as filling it would result in costly luxury tax penalties. If the Celtics do choose to sign a player, it likely would be Walker, who played well in two exhibition games at TD Garden before not seeing the floor in Tuesday’s preseason finale in Toronto.

Skapintsev could be bound for Maine, as well. The Ukrainian 7-footer played in three preseason games after the Celtics acquired his rights from the New York Knicks’ G League squad, totaling eight points, three rebounds, three blocks and two steals in 28 minutes.

The Celtics must have their regular-season roster set by 5 p.m. ET on Monday. They open the season next Tuesday at home against the Knicks.
