Red Sox DH Masataka Yoshida undergoes successful shoulder surgery

The Red Sox announced on Wednesday that designated hitter Masataka Yoshida has undergone successful shoulder surgery.

According to the team, Yoshida underwent a successful right shoulder labral repair on Oct. 3, four days after the conclusion of the regular season. The procedure was performed by Dr. Evan O’Donnell at Massachusetts General Hospital.

The club did not provide an expected recovery timeline, nor any details about whether Yoshida will be ready for the start of spring training.

The possibility that Yoshida could need surgery first came to light over the final weekend of the regular season. The designated hitter told reporters that it did not occur on any specific play but was something he’d been battling through for much of the year.

Red Sox DH Masataka Yoshida to undergo MRI on right shoulder

“When I had swing and misses I felt it a little bit, but I felt like I could keep swinging and playing so that’s why I kept playing,” Yoshida said via translator Yutaro Yamaguchi.

Yoshida underwent an MRI on Tuesday, Oct. 1, and had surgery two days later.

The shoulder procedure caps off a difficult year for Yoshida, who also spent six weeks on the injured list with a thumb strain between late-April and mid-June. His final offensive totals were respectable — he batted .280 with 10 home runs, 45 RBI and a .765 OPS — but he was limited entirely to DH duty after playing left field throughout his first season in Boston.

He also found himself frequently relegated to the bench, either because manager Alex Cora needed the DH spot for someone else or because a left-hander was on the mound. Yoshida has so far performed significantly better against righties than lefties since coming over from Japan, batting .300 with an .810 OPS against righties and .239 with a .669 OPS against southpaws.

Yoshida is entering the third year of his five-year, $90 million deal he signed ahead of the 2023 season.
