WNBA Finals: Keys to a Lynx victory in Game 3
Game 3 could prove to be a tipping point in these WNBA Finals.
The New York Liberty have a semblance of momentum coming off their Game 2 victory to level the series at one win apiece, but Minnesota now returns home for a pair of games.
The Lynx are 20-5 this year at Target Center, and their path to the WNBA title is likely with wins in Games 3 and 4 to void any return trip to New York. A Lynx win Wednesday would put all of the pressure on the Liberty for the remainder of the series.
Here are the keys for Minnesota to make that happen:
— Faster start: The Lynx trailed New York by 13 points after the first quarter of Game 1, and by 10 after 10 minutes of Game 2. Both times, Minnesota was able to dig itself out of the hole, even winning Game 1 in dramatic fashion. But playing from behind is no way to survive in this series. A faster start would allow the Lynx to better set the tone for the game and get the Liberty to press offensively.
— Shooter shines: Napheesa Collier and Courtney Williams have been the bankable offensive weapons for Minnesota, really, throughout the playoffs. But it’s the outside shooting that allows the Lynx offense to consistently shine. If Bridget Carleton or Kayla McBride can get hot from deep, everything else opens up for the Lynx on that end of the floor.
— Clean up the glass: New York scored 23 second-chance points in Game 1. And while that number was trimmed to 10 in Game 2, it’s something that has to be top of mind for Minnesota. The Lynx are difficult to score against on the shot of a possession. If the Lynx can consistently keep the Liberty to one-and-done trips downcourt, New York’s offense can dry up rather quickly.
