Red Sox moving on from six coaches, including first base coach Andy Fox

The Red Sox are planning a big shakeup to their coaching staff, with six members of last season’s staff set to leave the organization.

Those set to depart include first base/infield coach Andy Fox, bullpen coach Kevin Walker, assistant hitting coach Luis Ortiz, mental skills coach Rey Fuentes, trainer Ben Chadwick and bullpen catcher Mani Martinez.

News of the coaching changes was first reported by Alex Speier of The Boston Globe and confirmed by a Red Sox source.

Of that group, Fox is the most prominent name. Formerly an eight-year MLB veteran, Fox joined the Red Sox in 2011 as a minor league coordinator. He had just completed his first season as first base/infield coach, a role he took on last winter following his promotion from field coordinator.

Among other things, Fox was tasked with helping turn around Boston’s infield defense, which had devolved into a fatal flaw during the 2023 season. Though the group demonstrated improvement at times, infield defense was still a weakness this past season, with the club’s infielders collectively committing 67 errors.

As of this writing the remainder of Boston’s coaching staff is reportedly set to return, including bench coach Ramon Vazquez, hitting coach Peter Fatse, pitching coach Andrew Bailey, third base coach Kyle Hudson and catching coach/game planning coordinator Jason Varitek.
