MIAA Board of Directors hikes ref pay
It will take a little time but high school officials throughout Massachusetts will be getting a raise.
At Wednesday’s MIAA Board of Directors meeting, vice president Tom Arria opened his finance/personnel committee report by saying that the Finance Committee approved a 7-percent pay increase for officials across the board starting with the 2025-26 school year.
“I would say that as we reviewed officials’ fees, we took into account the cost of living increases – gas, car maintenance, food, rent,” Arria said. “Everyone knows that officials are very important to what we do. Normally, we give them a 3-percent raise, so we more than doubled that for the 2025-26 season and then we’ll have the finance committee do a deep dive into those numbers moving forward.”
In other matters, there was a rule clarification on Rule 40.7.2. that addresses student eligibility to attend a school, whether through residence or an application process. This applies to all schools, including public, private, vocational, charter and school choice.
A candidate is defined as a varsity or sub-varsity athlete who participated in a high school program at some interscholastic level the previous year and has eligibility remaining. It also pertains to a middle school student “selected” to participate in an out-of-season program as well as a sixth-grade student in a 7-12 high school or an eighth-grader in a 9-12 high school.
Associate Executive Director Richard Pearson announced the following were selected as recipients of the MIAA Distinguished Service Awards: Glenn Doulette, Martha Jamieson, Scott Paine and Mary Lou Thimas.
Before going into executive session, the Board voted unanimously to accept the application of Foxborough Regional Charter School for membership. The executive director of the school is Toby Romer, who spent more than two decades in the Boston and Newton schools before coming on board in June.
