India September 2024: Mahindra smashes records, wholesales off -1.1%

The Mahindra Thar breaks its volume record in September. Thar Roxx pictured.

It’s a third consecutive month of slight year-on-year declines for wholesales in India in September at -1.1% year-on-year to 358,879. However keep in mind September 2023 was a record month outright (not just September). The year-to-date volume is up 4.3% to a record 3,216,747 units. Maruti Suzuki drops -3.9% to 40.4% share ahead of Hyundai at -5.8% to 14.2%. The performer of the month is Mahindra, up a stellar 23.7% year-on-year to cross the 50,000 monthly sales barrier for the first time at 51,062, smashing its previous record of 43,708 hit in October 2023. The carmaker even finishes the month just 39 sales below Hyundai. Tata (-8.4%) is in difficulty at #4 ahead of Toyota (+7.4%) and Kia (+17.5%) both in solid shape. All remaining brand are in negative, with Honda (-42.5%), Jeep (-24.1%), Skoda (-18.1%) and Nissan (-13.9%) hit the hardest.

As for models, the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga (+28.9%) signs its first ever monthly win even though its volume decreases vs. August. #1 over the Full Year 2023 but down to #7 so far in 2024, the Maruti Suzuki Swift (+10.5%) rallies back up five spots on last month to #2 ahead of the Hyundai Creta (+25%). Leader in August, the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza (+2.1%) is down to #4 but still manage a positive year-on-year evolution. The Mahindra Scorpio (+21.9%) breaks into the Top 5 for the very first time yet doesn’t break its volume record. Excellent performances also by the Maruti Suzuki Fronx (+21.1%), Maruti Suzuki Eeco (+6.8%) and Tata Punch (+5.2%), still #1 year-to-date but #8 for the month. The Mahindra XUV700 and Thar (helped by the new Roxx variant, pictured) both break their volume record this month.
